- These guidelines will help you use lighted candles safely:
- Always extinguish candles before you leave a room and never go to sleep with a candle still burning.
- Extinguish candles before moving them and don't let anything fall into the hot wax.
- Keep clothes and hair away from the naked flame.
- Keep candles out of the reach of children and away from pets.
- Place the candle on a heat-resistant surface.
- Don't put lit candles under shelves - make sure there's at least 1m (3ft) between a candle and any surface above it.
- Extinguish the candle when the level of wax in the glass has reduced to 1cm from the base. This avoids any risk of the hot wax causing the base of the container to get too hot.
- Even once it is out, never pick up a candle that has recently been burning candle until it has cooled sufficiently to be able to do so.
